Bantu Horizons (Pty) Ltd is an interdisciplinary practice, registered in 2016 and started practicing in 2021, founded by Tumelo Patrick Mokoena. The initial aim of the practice was to submit Land Use Compliance applications due to the founder’s experience in Town and Regional Planning discipline, however as the founder gained more experience in strategic spatial planning and economic development through Township Establishment, development of Spatial Development Frameworks, Demarcation of Sites, Tenure Upgrading and Precinct Plan projects, etc.

The aim of company was reviewed as the interest in Infrastructure Management was ignited as a shift forward in the business operations, without compromising the core values of the business. In order to provide high-end premium services the vision had to strive towards a certain ideology and such Ideology is competitive conurbation. Thus the fusion of Infrastructure Management and Conurbation is acknowledged as a key importance of the business’ vision and mission, furthermost could be achieved through turnkey projects and systems facilitation.

After a brief investigation in predominately populated townships, rural villages and industries surrounding them, the founder identified that there is a gap of turnkey projects and market studies in such areas. Therefore if turnkey strategies and land market/feasibility studies could be adopted in such areas, unimaginable opportunities could be evolved and benefit the economy, societies and industries in such areas, enabling both rural and urban areas develop towards a state of competitive conurbation, which would require continuous infrastructure management. 

The idea then became to converge land use compliance applications with Strategic Spatial Management, Economic Development and Sustainable Management by developing market/feasibility studies while including Spatial Development Frameworks, Precinct Plans, Spatial Master Plans and Operational Strategies/Turnkey Projects for Infrastructure Development and Management.

What led you to become an entrepreneur?

South Africa’s current unemployment statistics is 8.2 million, meanwhile a big business such as Sibanye Stillwater Limited has managed to employ so far 84 775 personnel. However even if Sibanye Stillwater employs 84 775 more personnel the unemployment rate will only be flattened by 1%, thus indicate that as much as we would like to attract more investors in our economy, entrepreneurship is also in high demand. Therefore I have mostly been an independent thinker, good in operations management at a work place, dependable and driven to change the narrative about the profession that I find myself in. It gives me significance knowing that I am taking charge being the person I envision myself to be, meanwhile trying to address problems/challenges that most people are afraid to face, even though it requires journeying on a rough path and making a lot of sacrifices but would manage to flatten the unemployment rate with far less than 1%.

Ensure compliance with town planning by-laws and schemes to obtain necessary approvals for land use and business operations.

Market Studies

Conduct feasibility analyses to evaluate land use, economic phenomena, and optimal business plans.

Infrastructure Design

Creation of essential project drawings, including Township Layout Plans, Site Plans, Floor Plans, and Urban Design Models.

Land & Community Facilities Audit

Assess land usage and propose management systems for community facilities such as schools and recreational centers.

Turnkey Contract Works

Implement systematic strategies for daily operations, focusing on management systems, impact plans, and occupational health and safety.

Project Management

Oversee planning, evaluation, and organizational changes to ensure successful project execution within the professional services and construction industries.

Spatial Development Frameworks

Develop spatial planning strategies to guide local authorities on socio-economic aspects, infrastructure maintenance, and land use management.

Township Establishment

Plan and formalize developments, considering engineering services and the impacts on local governance and existing infrastructure.

Therefore the Practice has been operation since 2021 meanwhile the Managing Director of the Firm has over 7 years in the field of Town Planning and over three 3 years as a registered professional planner and keep on expanding on formal skills/qualification such as Project Management, Finance and Public Development Management. Therefore will continuously serve stakeholders in an ethical and professional manner.
